Fillings at Spring Smiles
Composite, Tooth-Colored Fillings
At our office, we exclusively use composite fillings to restore teeth that have been affected by cavities. Composite fillings are made of a special dental resin that can be colored to the exact shade of your surrounding teeth. These fillings offer better cosmetic results and a stronger bond to your teeth compared to traditional metal fillings.
Remove & Replace Metal Fillings
The SMART Process
Do you have old metal fillings that you would like to have replaced with tooth-colored resin? Old fillings may come loose and cause tooth decay, and some patients don’t like the silver-gray appearance of metal fillings- Dr. Duncan can help! We specialize in SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique). This means that we use special techniques to ensure that your treatment is as safe and comfortable as possible. We make sure to surround your tooth with a dental dam and use aerosol vacuums during every SMART procedure.
What to Expect
The Dental Filling Process
It only takes one quick appointment to have a tooth filled at our office. Dr. Duncan will begin by numbing your mouth and cleaning the treatment area. Once your tooth is numb, he will use specialized tools to remove the damaged and decayed enamel from your tooth.
Next, he will select a composite filling material that fits the shade of your surrounding teeth perfectly, and begin filling and restoring your tooth. The filling will be reshaped until it fits your natural bite perfectly. Once the filling has been placed, minor adjustments may be made to ensure that it looks and feels natural. The entire process usually takes less than an hour for most cavities.
Signs of Cavities
Recognizing When You Need a Filling
If you have a cavity, it’s important to get a filling as soon as you can to ensure that your decayed tooth does not become infected. A tooth infection is a much more serious issue and will require a root canal for treatment.
Thankfully, it’s fairly easy to recognize the signs of a cavity. Increased sensitivity to heat, cold and the pressure of chewing may indicate tooth decay. A toothache is also a likely indicator of a cavity. You may also be able to see dark stains, pitting, or holes in a tooth. If you notice one or more of these signs, schedule an appointment with Dr. Duncan right away.
